Zanahoria canaria de arena (Ammodaucus nanocarpus)

Small annual plant, delicate, stems glabrous and finely striated, branching from the base. Leaves bi- or tri-pinnate, rather fleshy, light green to greyish-green. Inflorescences umbelliform, 2-4 ray florets, composed of tiny whitish-violet flowers. Fruits slightly oval, 4-8 mm long. A native of the Canaries and North Africa, present in Tenerife, Fuerteventura and the neighbouring coast of southwest Morocco, where it occupies the sandy stony terrain of arid zones (including malpaíses or badlands, with some soil), both along the shoreline and inland. It is quite common in several zones but its abundance depends on annual rainfall. This plant is avoided by grazing animals.
