Vidália (Azorina vidalii)
Small perennial (0.8-1.5 m), glabrous, with white latex. The leaves are arranged in terminal rosettes and are simple, oblong-crenate, glossy green and somewhat dentate. Flowers are very striking and grouped in terminal racemes; they can be white or pink and are bell-shaped, which is a feature of this botanical family. The species is locally abundant on coastal cliffs, crags and rocky outcrops, generally up to 50 m, occasionally above. This endemic of the Azores is found on all the islands, except for Graciosa, but is not common. Due to its ecological specialization and restricted range, it is under a certain degree of threat. Highly attractive as an ornamental, it could be promoted as a garden plant in coastal settings.
