Uva-da-serra, uva-do-mato, rosmaninho (Vaccinium cylindraceum)

Shrub up to 3.5 m tall. Leaves are alternate, oblong, acuminate and serrate on the margins, 3-5 cm long. Inflorescences axillary, with numerous flowers of red, white or pink petals in a bell-shaped corolla. Fruits are rather fleshy, bluish-black, ovoid and up to 1.5 cm long. Dotted over hillsides and rocky outcrops, but particularly found deep in the heart of juniper and laurel forests above 300 m, it is most common in wet zones. This endemic of the Azores grows on all the islands, except for Graciosa. It has considerable potential as an ornamental and could be planted in the gardens of the archipelago. Moreover, the species of this genus produce edible fruits, which is why it is commonly alluded to as a grape in the Azores.
