Tajinaste rojo, tajinaste rosado (Echium wildpretii)

Biennial, unbranched shrub, basal rosette of large, linear leaves, hairy to the touch. The scape is formed by hundreds of flowers, arising from the centre of the rosette and reaching up to 2-3 m. Flowers are red (subspecies wildpretii, native to Tenerife) or pink (subspecies tricosiphon, native to La Palma). Relegated to high mountain regions, usually above 2,000 m in Tenerife and 1,600 m in La Palma. Locally common in certain areas of Las Cañadas (Tenerife) and very rare within La Caldera de Taburiente National Park (La Palma). It is also cultivated in gardens located at a certain altitude, such as in south Tenerife.
