Sorveira (Sorbus maderensis)

Deciduous shrub up to 3 m tall. Leaves pinnate, 5-15 cm long, composed of 12-15 lanceolate leaflets, with crenate margins, deep dark green on top. Numerous whitish or creamy flowers are arranged in terminal clusters. Fruits are globose (8-13 mm across), becoming deep red when ripe. This plant is exclusive to Madeira and relegated to the high mountain ridges of the island, between 1,400 and 1,750 m. It is highly threatened, due to low numbers of populations with very few specimens, and is classified as an Endangered species. It is one of the symbols of Funchal Ecological Park, a protected area which includes its main distribution area.
