Saxifraga (Saxifraga maderensis var. maderensis)
Perennial herb or shrub, with a woody branched stem, often hanging. Leaves dark green, reniform to semi-circular, lobate and dentate, and up to 2.5 cm long. Flowers are white and more or less densely clustered in a terminal raceme. Endemic to the island of Madeira, characteristic of rocky areas of evergreen forest and high montane vegetation, from 500-1,800 m altitude. Generally uncommon, although it can be abundant in certain locations. S. pickeringii is very similar to the typical variety and is relegated to the highest peaks of Madeira. Another species of the genus Saxifraga in Madeira is S. portosanctana, a native of Porto Santo.
