Retama del Teide (Spartocytisus supranubius)

Shrub, dense, erect, compact and highly branched, stems thick and glaucous green. Leaves are trifoliate, small, with linear leaflets. Flowers in dense clusters, white or pinkish-white and very fragrant. When in full bloom, it is clearly visible against the landscape because of its striking brilliant white flowers that dominate the landscape. Fruit (pod) is black, rather downy and contains 4-6 seeds. Endemic to the Canary Islands, typical of high montane vegetation in Tenerife and La Palma, where it grows between 1,700 and over 2,500 m; less common on the slopes of Mt Teide. Abundant and dominant in the highest peaks of Tenerife, where it grows extensively, while in La Palma it is much less common and often found on remote rocky outcrops and slopes.
