Pico cernícalo, pico de El Sauzal (Lotus maculatus)

Scrambling shrub, leaves linear, 10-18 mm long, pubescent and pale green. Flowers are yellow, with red-orange tips. This native of Tenerife is restricted to two locations on the north coast: El Sauzal and Roque de Tierra (Anaga). It has, however, been planted in other coastal areas as part of a plan to recover the species as an ornamental because it is highly prized in horticulture. Naturally growing populations total fewer than 50 specimens, hence this species is considered Critically Endangered. Hybrids with Lotus berthelotti, another native of Tenerife, are cultivated in many a garden and usually look like a cross between the two species.
