Citrus Butterfly (Papilio demodocus)

A species of papilionid butterfly from sub-Saharan Africa, also known as Christmas butterfly because adults emerge at that time. Distribution extends to the south of the Arabian Peninsula and from central to South Africa, including Madagascar and Cape Verde (Santo Antão, São Nicolau, Santiago, Fogo and Brava), in lowland areas of gardens and natural surroundings. This butterfly has a large wingspan (9-12 mm), is black with pale yellow bands and spots, and has two eyespots on the lower edge of the hind wings, a survival strategy against predators. The caterpillars feed on fruit trees and other crops and can become a major pest, particularly on citrus trees.
