Moth (Rhyparia rufescens)
Endemic to the Canary Islands and only present in La Gomera (R. gomerensis), Tenerife and Gran Canaria (R. rufescens). This nocturnal moth is found from August to December in laurisilva laurel forests and degraded areas feeding on faya wax-myrtle, vinagrera shrub, Euphorbia lathyris, Nicotiana glauca, Kleinia neriifolia and many other species, including ornamentals. This moth has a wingspan of 43-54 mm, and the body is covered with thick hairs that vary in colour from red, reddish-brown to dark brown. Four dark patches from which extend four faint stripes are visible on the edges of the forewings. Males are easily distinguished by their bipectinated antennae. The caterpillars are also very hairy and breathe through brilliant white spiracles or holes in their sides.
