Palha-bidião (Polycarpaea gayi)

Erect herb, somewhat branched, up to 50 cm tall. Branches are greyish-green or silvery, as are the leaves, which are opposite to whorled, ovate or oblong-spathulate, tomentose. Inflorescences terminal, with whitish or light brown flowers. An endemic of Cape Verde and found on the islands of Santo Antão, São Nicolau, Santiago and Fogo, but also reported for São Vicente, Sal and the islet of Branco, but with no recent or reliable sources. This rupicolous species is distributed from sea level to 2,400 m and is locally common. For this reason it has been classified as Least Concern.
