Ortiga (Forsskaolea procridifolia)

Erect herb, up to 1 m (occasionally to 1.2 m) and rather branched. Leaves elliptic to ovate-elliptic, 10 cm long and 5 cm wide, dark green on top and whitish beneath, margins dentate. Inflorescences axillary, small and greenish. An endemic of Cape Verde and found on the islands of Santo Antão, São Vicente, Santa Luzia, São Nicolau, Sal, Maio, Santiago, Fogo and Brava, and the islets of Branco and Raso. It occupies many different habitats, from sea level to 2,700 m. This species is used for forage and medicinal purposes, but is locally abundant and not under any real threat. It has therefore been classified as Least Concern.
