Orquídea canaria (Orchis canariensis)

An annual plant and a bulbous geophyte, which grows to 30 cm. Basal leaves are wide, ovate, dark green and slightly shiny, with no flecks. Flower stems are herbaceous and reddish-purple. Flowers are lilac or pink, with purple markings on the lower lips. Species characteristic of the rocky areas of Canary Island pine (Pinus canariensis) forests, as well as the lower transition zones, generally appearing between 500 and 1,300 m altitude, often in plentiful colonies. Distribution encompasses all the central and western islands (Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro). One of four orchids endemic to the Canaries.
