Mato-branco (Verbascum cystolithicum)

Perennial woody shrublet (up to 80 cm), with branched woody stems. Leaves in rosettes, petiolate, narrowly elliptic and up to 10 cm long, dark green with bronze margins. Flowers are arranged terminally on flower stems and are yellow with violet markings. Endemic to the island of Fogo, it is mainly present between 1,300 and 2,800 m altitude, on areas of lapilli and recent lava flows, and is one of the first plants to colonize such areas after volcanic eruption. Considered common, with no significant conservation issues, it is therefore not really endangered and is one of the most characteristic floral features in Fogo Nature Park, which includes Pico Novo volcano and surrounding caldera.
