Matabrusca negra (Salsola divaricata)

Compact highly-branched shrub up to 1.5 m, branches woody. Leaves opposite, very fleshy, somewhat linear, although the apex is wider than the base, entire and dark green. Flowers are disc-shaped, whitish-pink, and clustered at the tip of the branches. Endemic to the Canary Islands and found on all the islands, except El Hierro. This species is highly characteristic of coastal halophyte and psammophile communities, which often extend inland, colonizing abandoned cultivation terraces and formerly tilled soils, thereby becoming substitution communities. In Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, it is found in sandy and stony ground, but is widely distributed in the central islands and La Gomera, flourishing on a great variety of substrates. Only one questionable record is given for La Palma and no specific locations are known.
