Macela (Asteriscus daltonii ssp. vogelii)

Small, compact cushion plant, up to 50 cm. Branches erect or ascending, leaves oblanceolate to narrowly oblanceolate, up to 7 cm long and 1.5 cm wide, silky and smooth to the touch, clustered in rosettes. Flowers are yellow and borne singly at the tip of each branch. An endemic of Cape Verde and found on the islands of Santo Antão, São Vicente, São Nicolau, Maio, Santiago, Fogo and Brava, and the islets of Branco and Cima. Its range is extensive, from sea level to 1,940 m, but in some islands it is only found at mid-altitude. Due to human activity, this plant is currently present on crags, mountains and hillsides, as well as on young volcanic terrain. This species has been generally classified as Least Concern, but on several islands it is considered Vulnerable (São Nicolau) or Critically Endangered (Brava).
