Louro-da-terra, loureiro (Laurus azorica)
Dioecious (unisexual male and female flowers on separate plants), up to 13 m. Leaves elliptic, oblong or obovate, light and dark green when young and mature, respectively, pointed, aromatic and up to 15 cm long and 6 cm wide. Inflorescence subsessile, with pale yellow flowers. Fruits are blackish, elliptic and up to 1-2 mm long and very similar to those of other species of the Laureaceae family in Macaronesia. This species is native to the Azores, where it is widely distributed; the laurels of the Canary Islands and Madeira have been described as Laurus novocanariensis. It occupies all damp wooded areas, up to 850 m. As with L. nobilis and L. novocanariensis, the leaves are used for culinary purposes.
