Jorao, jorjao, tojía (Asteriscus sericeus)

Densely branched, woody shrub, up to 1 m. Leaves located near the tip, broadly oblanceolate, 3-5 cm long, herbaceous, covered in silvery silky down on both sides. Flowers large (3-5cm in diameter), very striking and bright yellow. Endemic to Fuerteventura and very common locally in cool mountainous areas, above 400 m altitude, particularly in Jandía massif, but also in central and northern areas of the island. A well-known horticultural species, although it has escaped cultivation and established itself in the wild on several islands. The genus Asteriscus has other perennial species in Macaronesia, particularly on the central and western islands of the Canaries and Cape Verde, and in nearby North Africa.
