Jarilla turmera, turmero (Helianthemum canariense)

Small shrub, scrambling or slightly ascending, woody at base and rather branched. Leaves oval, up to 1 cm long, pubescent and greyish-green. Flowers solitary, 1-2 cm in diameter, pale yellow. This native of the Canaries and North Africa has been recorded for all the Canary Islands, including La Graciosa and Lobos, although its presence in El Hierro and La Palma is currently uncertain. It is abundant in the central and eastern islands, where it is widespread in lowland areas and semi-arid habitats, from sea level to 600 m. In Northwest Africa, it extends along the Atlantic seaboard from Morocco to Cap Blanc (Mauritania). It is the host plant to edible underground fungi of the genus Terfezia.
