Hija (Prunus lusitanica ssp. hixa)

Evergreen tree to 15-20 m, with a whitish trunk. Leaves are oblong-lanceolate to elliptic, up to 15 cm long, margins dentate or crenate, apex pointed, glossy and dark green; the new leaves have reddish petioles. Inflorescences are erect racemes of numerous creamy-white flowers, which lend the plant a striking appearance. Fruit is ovoid or globose, fleshy and blackish-purple when ripe. This is an endemic of the Canaries and Madeira, although the typical subspecies is distributed around the Atlantic and Mediterranean (Iberian Peninsula, south of France and Morocco). In Madeira it is relegated to the main island, while in the Canaries it is found in Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Gomera and La Palma. On both archipelagos it is typical of wet laurisilva laurel forests.
