Granadillo canario (Hypericum canariense)

Erect shrub, highly branched, up to 4 m tall. Leaves are herbaceous, linear-lanceolate or narrowly elliptic, up to 8 cm long, pale green, becoming yellowish with the arrival of the dry season. Bright yellow flowers, up to 2 cm in diameter, arranged in dense terminal inflorescences. Fruits are capsules that turn brown when ripe. Native to Macaronesia, this species is present in Madeira (only on the main island) and the central and western Canary Islands. Typical of thermophile vegetation, this plant is locally abundant and usually forms monospecific communities. It is ideally located in the transition zones between xerophytic vegetation and evergreen woodland, although its range extends from 25 to 1,700 m.
