Cape Verde Sparrow, Iago Sparrow (Passer iagoensis)

This small sparrow (13 cm), endemic to Cape Verde and very common in practically all the islands and islets (but very rare in Fogo), is related to other sparrows living at a considerable distance in continental Africa. Male and female plumage is very different: the male is rather striking with a reddish-chestnut head and back, while the female is a duller greyish-brown. This sparrow has adapted to a wide range of habitats, including cliffs, semi-arid surroundings and mountainous regions, and is frequently seen in towns and cultivated fields. The breeding season is from September-November, coinciding with heavy rainfall in the archipelago. Nests are lodged in cracks and hollows in rocky areas, walls, buildings and even street lamps. The Iago sparrow feeds on seeds and insects and is not afraid of human contact, often feeding out of the hand.
