Cape Verde Heron, Cape Verde Purple Heron (Ardea [purpurea] bournei)

This slender heron, up to 80 cm long, is distinguished from the purple heron (Ardea purpurea purpurea) by paler plumage, which is less reddish-brown. Endemic to Cape Verde, it is found exclusively on Santiago, where there are two small breeding colonies (one discovered very recently), while other previously occupied areas have been abandoned. Currently, there are no more than fifteen pairs, hence its endangered status. Unlike its continental relative, these birds only breed in treetops and often feed on arable lands and neighbouring areas, as well as artificial and natural wetlands near their nests. The species is threatened by the direct capture of specimens (particularly the young) and the felling or natural disappearance of trees in its nesting areas; it may also be affected by prolonged periods of drought.
