Follado canario, follao (Viburnum rigidum)
Small tree or shrub, evergreen, to 7-8 m. Leaves are ovate to suborbicular, large (up to 20 cm long), somewhat coriaceous, margins entire and pubescent on both sides. Flowers are numerous, white or whitish-yellow, clustered in dense terminal umbels, 10-15 cm wide. Fruits are fleshy, subglobose or oval (7 mm in diameter), purple or black when ripe. Native to the Canaries and found in the central and western islands. Common in evergreen and fayal-brezal firetree and heath forests, and damp pine forests, from 400-1,400 m. Traditionally, the branches were used in basketry and the wood for other purposes. It is also used for reforestation in potential domains of evergreen forest and for gardening.
