Esparraguera común, esparraguera (Asparagus umbellatus)

Scrambling shrub, whose thin spineless stems can reach up to 5 m, when resting on trees. Cladodes (false leaves) are thin, short, pointed and dark green. Inflorescence, a simple umbel, with tiny white or whitish-yellow flowers. Fruits are round, fleshy, reddish-brown to greenish-orange. This Macaronesian species has two subspecies: A. umbellatus, found in the Canaries (all islands except for Lanzarote, although it is rare and highly localized in Fuerteventura), and A. lowei, relegated to Madeira. It is locally abundant in the Canaries and very rare in Madeira, and typical of xeric and thermophile habitats, occasionally penetrating dry evergreen woodland and the lower edges of pine forests, in the case of the Canaries.
