Coroa-de-Rei (Sonchus daltonii)
Small shrub, up to 1.5 m tall, contains milky latex. Leaves arranged in a basal rosette, pinnatifid, elliptic to narrowly lanceolate, up to 50 cm long and 12.5 cm wide. The cauline leaves are broadly lanceolate and pinnatifid to entire. Inflorescence with 5-20 heads, subglobose, up to 4 cm in diameter, with yellow flowers. Native to Cape Verde and present on Santo Antão, São Vicente, São Nicolau, Santiago and Fogo, where its range extends from 450 to 2,200 m. A rupicolous plant characteristic of humid and subhumid zones, very rare in São Vicente and Santiago, where it is classified as Critically Endangered, although it is quite common on the other islands.
