Cerraja de mar (Reichardia crystallina)

Small, compact perennial, usually cushion-shaped. Leaves are pinnatisect, glaucous green or reddish-green, with numerous whitish papillae. Flowers are yellow and emerge from a scape or a small, generally solitary, terminal stem. They are relatively numerous on adult specimens, offering a striking appearance when in full bloom. Endemic to the Canary Islands, particularly in Gran Canaria and Tenerife, this coastal halophyte is abundant in the latter and grows along most of the southern coastline. It mainly appears on rocky and stony sites but also tolerates sandy, clay and pumice soil substrates, practically always on the shoreline. The genus Reichardia includes another two species native to the Canary Islands: R. famarae and R. ligulata.
