Carqueja (Limonium braunii)

Perennial plant that can reach up to 60 cm in height. Leaves spathulate, deep green, arranged in rosettes. Inflorescences terminal, stems generally winged, with compact spikelets of pinkish-white, white or pale pink flowers. This species is native to Cape Verde and distributed throughout the islands of Santo Antão, São Nicolau, Fogo and Brava, nearly always on windward slopes. This halophyte grows very near the shoreline up to 60 m. Very common on Santo Antão but less so on the other islands. It has been classified as a low risk species.
