Cardón de Jandía (Euphorbia handiensis)

Small, succulent cactus-like shrub, to 80 cm, highly branched, thick leafless stems, with long spines. Flowers are small, greenish-red or red, barely noticeable; fruits are spherical capsules, brown or red. This species is exclusive to Fuerteventura, where it is relegated to a few spots on the southern flank of Jandía massif (Gran Valle and Jorós and Los Mosquitos valleys), up to 150 m. Although some populations are relatively numerous, this highly localized species and its fragile habitat are subject to a degree of threat, despite being legally protected, along with most of its distribution area, under the auspices of Jandía Nature Reserve.
