Balsâmo (Umbilicus schmidtii)
Erect plant, to 30 cm, totally glabrous. Leaves arranged in twos, succulent, rather round; the basal leaves are orbicular, with a long stalk, up to 6 cm in diameter, while the cauline leaves are smaller. Inflorescence in terminal racemes, flowers yellowish-brown or greenish-white, tubular. This rare endemic of Cape Verde is typical of the subhumid zones of the islands of Santo Antão, São Nicolau, Santiago and Fogo, from 550-2,000 m, and mainly grows on north- and northeast-facing rocky walls. Because it is not common, it has been classified as Rare.
