Arrebol, palomino (Echium simplex)
Non-branching plant, with a basal rosette of large leaves. Leaves are elliptic-lanceolate, greyish-green and rough to the touch. The inflorescence is conical, up to 2 m tall and composed of hundreds of white flowers. This native of Anaga massif in Tenerife grows along the northern flank, on hillsides and rocky outcrops with a certain degree of atmospheric moistures, from 50-500 m, and is only relatively common locally. It does not grow within evergreen woodland but on the lower edges, in the potential domains of juniper forests and, at most, of fayal-brezal firetree and heath. It has been introduced as an ornamental in other Canary Islands, as well as abroad, and in some cases has now established itself in the wild.
