Amagante de pinar, amagante, jarón (Cistus symphytifolius)

Highly branched, woody shrub, up to 1 m, sometimes more. Evergreen or caducous foliage, located towards the tip of the branches. Leaves ovate to broadly lanceolate, very downy, with a rough surface, 8-10 cm long. Flowers are terminal, 5-6 cm in diameter, deep pink, although some specimens have completely white flowers (C. albiflorus). Fruits (capsules) are brown, firm and contain numerous small seeds. In pre-Hispanic times, they were used by the primitive settlers to make a kind of gofio (toasted meal). A native of Tenerife and La Palma, the other central and western islands have related species. A common feature of Canary pine forests and substitution scrub, roughly between 300 and 1,800 m.
